I have recently found that acquaintances in my life are choosing to eat vegetarian or vegan. I really did not want to get into a conversation or debate with them about their choice. But, it got me asking myself why they are choosing this? One person did tell me it wasn’t because of moral views, so why then? Well, I decided to put some thoughts and information out there in hopes of expanding some horizons.

Definitions

According to Google, Vegetarianism is defined as “a person who does not eat meat, and sometimes other animal products, especially for moral, religious, or health reasons”.

Also, according to Google, a Vegan is defined as “a person who does not eat or use animal products”.

Can You Be Healthy Long-Term?

Being a vegetarian or vegan and being healthy long-terms is not impossible, but it will likely be tough. I heard on a podcast not that long ago that was discussing vegetarianism and veganism and they were saying that it takes about 7 years for the long-term effects of missing nutrients and poor nutrient absorption to have a negative effect on their health.

Many folks who choose a vegetarian or veganism way of eating typically rely too heavily on grains, legumes, GMO foods, and highly-processed food-like products as the bulk of their diets. If you tolerate grains and legumes, it is ok to use them sparingly, however they are low in bio-available nutrients, they contain lectins and phytates, and can also contribute to intestinal permeability. It is helpful if you properly prepare them, soaking them overnight and allowing them to sprout before cooking them.  If you already have any intestinal permeability or inflammation they can wreak havoc. Generally speaking, these items also are not very nutrient dense, especially compared to other vegetable options. It is important to watch blood sugar issues with eating lots of grains and grain products.

Fruit is very yummy and do contain usable nutrients, but can cause increased issues with those with blood sugar problems and those who are fructose intolerant (avoid Agave). Eating some fruit is ok, but eating massive amounts of fruit all day isn’t a good idea.

A lot of folks also rely on soy products, which I say is a bad idea due to the estrogenic activity of soy. This is super important for men. Just say no to soy. Most soy is also GMO soy. If you choose to eat soy, I suggest you only eat traditionally fermented soy.

If the goal of either of these lifestyles is to be healthy, the main food items that need to be consumed is organic non-GMO vegetables, some fruit, and the use of supplements. Many vitamin and mineral deficiencies can occur over time from not eating animals and or animal products; for example: B12, iron, zinc, calcium, fat-soluble vitamins D and A, and other long-chain fatty acids like DHA and EPA.

Personal Opinion

I believe that having a plant-based diet is important. We should be eating a minimum of 2 – 3 cups of veggies with each meal. Eating a variety of foods is very important. Get them all and eat them all.

I also believe that the human body needs the bio-available nutrients that come from animal products (meats, organs, seafood, bi-products ie. Eggs, Bone Broth, Collagen Protein, Honey, Butter or Ghee.

I do not think that you have to eat meat or animal products with every meal to gain the nutrients your body needs. If you focus on the most nutrient dense the less you have to eat of them, like cold-water fatty fish, liver, pastured egg yolks, pastured bison or beef.

I believe that there are good and ideal ways for people to eat animals and animal products that do not involve large-scale factory farming practices ie. feed-lots and other confined animal feeding operations, closed-in chicken farms, or GMO plants etc. Vote with your dollar!

In my post Quality Food Sources, I provide my thoughts on sourcing our foods from responsible places. Regardless if you eat meat or not, you should be sourcing your produce from locally grown sources, the closer to you they are grown the less nutrients are lost and the less gasoline is needed to transport it. You can source responsibly raised and butchered meats, bones, and organs. With a little online research you can find local farmers and ranchers that are doing things in an ethically responsible way. If you have local farmers markets that is also a good place to start, they are usually there. Ask questions.

Small Rant:

It is naive to think that because you are vegan or vegetarian that your food doesn’t cause animal death. It does. The farming practices kill hundreds and thousands of animals and animal habitats. Why is it ok to kill a field mouse, mole, rabbit, snake, insect or bird and not a cow, pig, or deer? Anyway, that is not really a question….

The Bible says in Genesis 9:3 “Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. And as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything.” There is A LOT more details in in Deuteronomy 14:1-29 and in Leviticus 11:1-47. The Maker’s Diet has a bunch of details in it too.

Improved Sleep with Essential Oils (N=1)

I have been struggling with poor sleep quality for a long while now. I’ve been experimenting with all sorts of stuff externally and internally to help me sleep better. I’ve been quite impressed with my improved quality of sleep using a blend of essential oils before bed.

I like to cover quite a large area with my blend so I use a ¼ – ½ a teaspoon of a carrier oil to maximize my spread-ability. I personally prefer to use Sweet Almond Oil, but you can use coconut oil, fractionated coconut oil, sesame seed oil, grape seed oil etc.

At the end of my nightly routine, right before I climb into bed to wind down for sleep – I rub the blend on the underside of both my arms, from my wrists to my elbows, all over my chest and neck, and on/around my nose holes.

Here is what to do –

  1. Open each of the following oils: Lavender, Cedarwood, Peace & Calming II
  2. Pour ¼ – ½ a teaspoon of a carrier oil into the palm of my hand
  3. Add 4 drops of Lavender
  4. Add 2 drops of Cedar wood
  5. Add 2 drops of Peace & Calming II

Homemade Lemonade with an Extra Vitamin C Kick!

Homemade Lemonade, Vitamin C

Last year was an extremely stressful year for me. I knew I was stressed out, but I do not think I realized exactly how much at the time and the lack of support I was giving my body. In 2014 between June and August….I graduated college, got married, changed jobs, and moved homes. Not to mention…kept up with life at the same time. Followed by adjusting to being married, adjusting to the new job, and family drama.

Needless to say my body waked-out on me! I couldn’t figure out what was going on…I kept thinking it was hormonal. I was partially correct…..the the stress and subsequent consequences of the stress caused my adrenals to go into over-load. This affected my thyroid and caused it to under produce. The combination caused a myriad of symptoms.

So, to the point! To give some LOVE to my adrenals I make “Homemade Lemonade with an Extra Vitamin C Kick!” daily. The adrenals love vitamin C!

Please take a special note that not all vitamin C is made equally. Quality matters, as with most things you put into your body. I personally like Health Force Nutritionals: Truly Natural Vitamin C. It is in powder form. I purchased mine at Sprout’s, but you can find it online everywhere. If this brand doesn’t suit you, try to find a brand that is 100% from food or food-derived and is a vitamin C complex not an isolated nutrient.

Vit. C

Yummy Recipe for my “Homemade Lemonade with an Extra Vitamin C Kick!”

  • Aprox. 6 to 8 oz of water (however much that glass holds)
  • 1/2 to 1 Lemon Juiced
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon of Vitamin C Powder
  • 1/2 pkg of Stevia Powder (organic brand)

I mix this all together and drink it down. I feel great after I drink it. I hope you add this cocktail to your daily routine as well.

Face Wash

11 Wednesday Feb 2015

Posted by ByCandace in Beauty

I love this face wash!

I gave my sister the ingredients and directions as a Christmas gift this year. She sent me a text approximately two weeks later and told me that she has seen a big difference in her skin, loves it, and will continue to use it!

This is easy and fast to make….cause I like easy and fast. Also very cost effective!

Face Wash

Aloe Vera Gel is the base. I like the brand shown below.

DSC01437

Dr. Bronner’s Pure Castile Liquid Soap. I like using the tea tree oil one for my face wash (orange).

DSC01434

Lastly – Rosehip Oil

DSC01441

Get a container you like – I personally re-purposed a small bottle of Dr. Bonner’s liquid soap and use that for my face wash. Depending on the size of your bottle will depend on how much of each you use.

Use equal parts of Aloe Vera Gel and Dr. Bronner’s soap and as much Rosehip oil as you like and get results with. I have used less and more (by accident) and just went with it.

I use 1/4 cup of Aloe Vera Gel, 1/4 cup of Dr. Bronner’s soap, and 2 Tbs of the Rosehip Oil. For a bigger bottle you can double these measurements.

The best part of this recipe for me is that it gets all my make-up off and my face is not striped; the Rose hip oil makes my face feel supple, however I still use my skin toner and moisturizer after.

In the morning when I do not have make-up on I love to use unfiltered raw local honey on my damp face, let it sit for a while and then rinse it off. Honey is really healthy for your skin.

Happy Washing!

What is Self-Care to you?

03 Tuesday Feb 2015

Posted by ByCandace in Lifestyle

In my podcasts that I listen to each week, see my post Recommended Podcasts to see what I listen to, the word “self-care” keeps coming up so I thought I would share my self-care with you.

In a world and lives full of stress, if we do not take the time to take care of ourselves we will run ourselves down to a sick and tired heap. I have done this to myself on more than one occasion in my life.

I do my best to take care of myself through self-care daily, weekly, monthly – regularly.

There is physical self-care and mental self-care – here is what I do….

The mental part is more difficult than the physical part….I keep my perspective and this helps me to find joy in the mundane. When I start getting mentally outawhack, I go through all the things in my head that I am blessed and grateful for, there is always something no matter how bad life may seem at the time. I catch myself with negative self-talk, stop it, and then tell myself something good in that thought’s place. Meditation is great, I get into a meditative state when I cook, so if I am stressed out I go cook.

The physical self-care is much more fun! And I have pics!

First and foremost treat your body well with good whole healthy foods. You have to eat anyway, might has well be good for your body – that is the ultimate self-care.

Do not take yourself so seriously! I am a serious gal by nature, so this one is hard for me, but I’m learnin!

Spend some time with you! Go get a manicure and pedicure, (if you cannot afford to go somewhere to do it, do it for yourself at home). Take a long hot bath (with Epsom Salt). Take a nap. Read a book or watch a movie you have been wanting to read or see. Get your hairs did, get a massage, or go workout.

Spend time with friends and hug it out!

There are so many ways that we can give ourselves a break!

I would love to hear what you do for self-care. Please feel free to share in the “comments” section of this post.

Body Moisturizer

28 Sunday Dec 2014

Posted by ByCandace in Beauty

What we do not put on our skin is very important. Our skin absorbs what is placed on it. I have slowly switched to organic and non-toxic skin care products. Some products I have found are much less expensive and easy for me to make myself. This also is a comfort that I know exactly what I am putting on my skin.

Body Moisturizer

DSC01445

Since it is winter time I like to warm my coconut oil slightly so it melts. It does not take much heat to do this, I do not like to warm it very hot. During summer months it is usually warm enough in the house that the coconut oil softens and is easily mixed with the essential oils without heating in a pot.

The amount of oil you use will depend on the size of the jar you use. I prefer to use a shallow wide-mouth jar so it is easy to get out and you can easily reach the bottom of the jar and none goes to waste.

DSC01446

For my body I like to use a little bit of lavender and eucalyptus oil. I do not measure, I just shake a little out. Then I use about twice as much of the grapefruit and lemongrass oil. This combo makes you smell delicious and is good for the skin.

DSC01447

Stir it around till mixed thoroughly and pour it up in a glass jar with a lid. Once it cools down the coconut oil will solidify. When it comes time to use, I just scoop some out with my fingers and it will melt in your hands and rub it into the skin.

NOTE: I got the idea for this recipe from http://draxe.com/grapefruit-cellulite-cream/ – however I like add several different essential oils that is also good for the skin other than just grapefruit oil.

Skin Toner

17 Wednesday Dec 2014

Posted by ByCandace in Beauty

The recipes that I use and I share with you are not originals; honestly I am not sure there is such thing as original anymore…..anyway….

I try my best to be cost effective, so I attempt to use ingredients that can be used in multiple recipes and that last a long time. I like to use quick and easy recipes to save time, since none of have a lot of that these days.

Skin Toner

Toner is not just for your face and neck. It can also be used on your chest and armpits post shaving.

I have played around with toners; here is what I have learned. I like to make a small batch using three or four of the travel size (airplane approved) bottles. I put one in my bathroom and store the others in the refrigerator until I need them. If you have just one bigger bottle you want to use go for it.

If you have time to brew tea – Chamomile tea is a nice base for skin toner. Make sure to let it cool down before mixing it up in a recipe.

DSC01442

If you want to be super fast you can use Aloe Vera Juice as your base instead of tea. I do not use the “good stuff” for this.

DSC01436

Pour approximately 2/3 of the bottle(s) full of the base of your choice.

If I am not in a hurry when I make this I might add a little less of the base liquid and add a little bit of Witch Hazel. I use approximately 1/8 of the bottle(s). If you have dry skin I would skip the Witch Hazel.

The magic ingredient is non-filtered Apple Cider Vinegar.

DSC01438

Then pour 1/3 of the bottle(s) up with the non-filtered Apple Cider Vinegar.

The measuring for this is not an exact science. I do not even measure anything; I eye-ball it.

A note to think about: my husband calls this “stinky face”. He does not like the smell of vinegar. I personally do not mind it. The smell fades when it dries and you put moisturizer on over it.

I have been using this toner for a very long time and I love it. I hope you do as well.

Natural Skin Care

13 Thursday Nov 2014

Posted by ByCandace in Beauty

According to many sources, including the American Academy of Dermatology, “skin is your body’s largest organ” (aad.org, 2014). Skin is permeable; meaning that what you put on it will be absorbed into your body.

Have you read the ingredients list on your skin care products? Can you pronounce them? Do you know what they are? Do you know where they come from?

If the answer to any or all of those questions are no…..it might be time to re-think your skin care products.

Most of the ingredients that you cannot pronounce, don’t know what they are or where they come from typically fall under the category of a chemical and or something weird that your body likely will not recognize and make your liver and lymph system filter out or store in your body fat.

Anything you can do to take stress off your liver and lymph system will make a healthier body!

When I first started to migrate to more natural skin care I visited Whole Foods and other health food stores to seek out better products than what I was using. That was step-one for me and I suggest that you all do the same.

When you are ready for step two, which by the way tends to be much more cost efficient, you can make your own skin care “products” at home. OR Jump right to step two!

Right now I am making my own body wash, body moisturizer, face wash, toner, face moisturizer, face masks, and deodorant. All are easy to make, only take a few minutes to make, and few ingredients each.

One ingredient face exfoliation – a handful of baking soda. Moisten it a little and rub gently on a damp face. I do this at least every three days.

More to come on the recipes I use for my skin care “products”.
