HIFU Skin Tightening Treatment

18 Friday Jan 2019

I won a free HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound) skin tightening treatment from Shining Way Esthetics in December of 2018. Brenda Musia performed the treatment on me. Brenda is a fantastic esthetician and is doing quarterly facials on me going forward. My first one will be at the end of March of 2019, when I go back to do my “after” pictures from my HIFU treatment.

brenda musia

No one in their right mind would pass up an opportunity for a free treatment that boasts the benefits of collagen production and skin tightening. So, on Friday, December 28, 2018 I found myself at Shining Way Esthetics in Katy, TX to have the HIFU treatment done.

About HIFU

hifu machine

HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound) uses ultrasound to penetrate deeply through the layers of skin to encourage collage production and tightening of the skin. It is also used for skin lifting and body contouring. It also reduces wrinkles, shrinks pores, improves skin tone, and can reduce fat deposits under the chin and on the neck. It is known as a non-invasive facelift.

This treatment can be used on other areas of the body, such as the décolletage, abdomen, triceps (bat-wings), thighs, and under the buttocks.

While there can be some immediate results (depending on the person), most of the result will occur over 3 to 7 months’ time. And the result can last up to two years, but certainly for at a year.

My Treatment

The treatment starts by using a numbing gel on the face. We did an all-over application at the beginning.

numbing cream

What I suggest is to do numbing gel on the first and or second sections, then when the treatment is happening on the first and or second section apply the numbing gel to the third and or fourth sections.

So the numbing gel will rotate around the face doing its job while the treatment occurs on the other parts of the face. This will prevent the numbing gel from wearing off by the time you get to the last sections.

Two all-over face treatments are performed at different intensities to reach different depths of the skin layers. You want the numbing gel to still be working by the time the treatment gets to the second round.

drawings 3

My total treatment time was about 2 hours. This was a new treatment for the spa and for Brenda, so she took her time during the treatment. The more she does it the more efficient she will get.

It feels like little electric pulses, zapping or tinkling sensation. Each person has different areas that may or may not be sensitive on their face. My sensitive area was my lower cheek and jaw area. I’m guessing that, that is the area of my face that needed it the most, because that was also the area of my face that had mild swelling and soreness for a few week after. I felt it in the shallow skin area on my forehead, but most of the other places were painless, with the numbing gel in play.

Once the numbing gel wore off, I felt much more of the electric pulses, but it wasn’t unbearable.

Once the treatment was completed, she cleaned me up, moisturized me and I was on my way! I had no redness left on my face and no visible swelling after the treatment.

In 3 months I am going back to Shining Way Esthetics to see Brenda to take “after” pictures. After that time I will update you on my results.

After Treatment

I was told not to use any hot water on my face for 24 hours.

I also thought that it would be a good idea to be very gentle with my face for the first 4 days after treatment. I used lukewarm water, a gentle cleanser, a calming toner, and moisturizers.

My favorite moisturizers of late are: Daytime – Andalou Naturals Probiotic +C Renewal Cream and Nighttime – Andalou Naturals Fruit Stem Cell Night Repair Cream.

I didn’t use anything scrubbing on my face, no cleaning brushes, no wash cloths, no exfoliators, nor glycolic acid or anything of the like.

I think I waited till day 5 before using Derma-E Vitamin A Glycolic Facial Scrub.

To help your face in rebuild collagen, I do suggest using hyaluronic acid. Once your face is clean, while still damp add the hyaluronic acid, then wait 30 seconds, and add your moisturizer last. This is something you can do all the time, not only after this treatment.

Check out my post on the best beauty brands to use, here.

Also, LED light therapy can help with acne, reduce fine lines and winkles, and build collagen. Here are a couple inexpensive options from Amazon. One and Two.

From the Inside Out

It wouldn’t be me writing to you unless I spoke to you about building your skin from the inside out. The best thing that I’ve done for my skin is take collagen peptides. I take unflavored collagen peptides in my coffee every morning. Vital Proteins also has flavored collagen options and collagen coffee creamers (Mocha, Vanilla, Gingerbread, Coconut).

Vital Proteins developed specific products for beauty, check them out below.

The Muscle Stick

I want to introduce to you my favorite recovery tool. I found it on Amazon about 3 months ago for $19.99 and it has been the best twenty-bucks I’ve spent in a long time!

If you have issues with sore muscles, stiffness, or knots in your muscles, I highly recommend this tool to you.

FYI: I do not have any affiliation with this product or Amazon.

I’ve been using it every day, if only for a few minutes and sometimes longer. I roll out my feet, legs, glutes, and arms without help. I occasionally will talk my husband into rolling out my back and glutes for me. It has done wonders for my forearms, shoulder caps, calves, quads, and hamstrings.

I think that my cellulite has decreased since using it regularly. Considering the roller helps with fascia manipulation and increased blood-flow, it makes since. So that’s a nice bonus.

If you decide to get one, please feel free to leave me a comment on this post and let me know how you like it.

Cheers to recovery and feeling good!

Beauty Products Review: URSA Major

#safebeauty, #safeskincare

In my Safe Skincare Brands post, I listed a brand called URSA Major.

Side Note: I’m not an affiliate nor gain any money or products from this brand.

On their webpage there is a link called Try The Line; I purchased the Clear, Healthy Skin Trial Kit which has a two-week supply of their “award-winning face care favorites” for $20.

URSA Major

The kit includes:

  • Fantastic Face Wash
  • 4-in-1 Essential Face Tonic Spray
  • Fortifying Face Balm
  • Essential Face Wipes (3 singles)

Kit

I recommend everyone buy this kit and try these products for yourself. I really like them! I was super surprised at the high-performance of these products. They did what they said they would do.

The best part for me is the affordability of this brand and products. You get a lot of bang for your bucks!

Should you choose to purchase products from URSA Major you will be supporting a U.S.A. company out of Vermont. The quality is of the highest! With 98.6 – 100% naturally-derived, no chemicals (“no petrochemicals, sulfates, parabens, synthetic fragrances, color, glycols, silicones, or PEGs”), gluten-free, and not tested on animals. You can feel good about putting these products on your skin (ultimately in your body).

I purchased from their webpage, but they do have retailers. You can find the nearest you using their Store Locator on their webpage.

My Review

Fantastic Face Wash – The two best things about the face wash is: 1) A little goes a long way; I know people say that about products a lot and it tends to not really be true. I am a professed “over user” when it comes to products, BUT this one it is true…..a little really does go a long way! 2) My face as never been so clean. My pours….cleaned out! Shock and Awe!! It has built-in exfoliating properties (not gritty ones, but through alpha hydroxyl acids). It has antioxidants, moisturizers, and soothers also built in for healthy looking and feeling skin. I love this product!

4-in-1 Essential Face Tonic Spray – It took me a little while to realize that this spray isn’t just a toner….it is an active tonic. It works as hard as the face wash! I was pleasantly surprised to find that this tonic made my face feel smooth, hydrated, and evened out my skin tone by calming redness. I seriously love this tonic!

Fortifying Face Balm – This product is ultimate! It goes on smooth and weightless. It actually absorbs into the skin (instead of sitting on top of the skin) and makes my face feel hydrated and firm. This is a perfect product for under make-up, because it absorbs into the skin and leaves a matte finish. In love!

Essential Face Wipes – As far as face wipes go, these worked fine. I was not a big fan of the material the wipes were made of; they weren’t very soft. I’m generally not a huge fan of face wipes. I honestly could take them or leave them.

3 out of 4 LOVES is pretty dang good!

URSA Major offers more products than these 4; check them all out here.

The two products that I’m looking forward to trying next are:

Force Field Daily Defense Lotion with SPF 18 – Boasts a 3-in-1 formula that nourishes and protects

Golden Hour Recovery Cream – Boasts intense hydration, anti-aging, soothing effects

I hope you give URSA Major’s products a try; they are affordable, high-preforming, and safe quality skincare.

To Track or Not To Track, That is the Question

19 Tuesday Jun 2018

Tags

#eatallthefood, #eatallthethings, #eatrealwholefood

As with most nutrition questions the answer is “it depends”…..blink blink….seriously though, it depends on the individual.

I personally despise the time and effort it takes to track calories and macros. However, I have found it helpful to do in short duration to see if I’m eating enough protein and to do periodic check-ins to make sure I’m eating enough calories. If I decide to actually do a shift in number of fat or carbs or cycle then I usually have to track for a few week to a month to get in a good groove.

When Not to Track

If you are the type of person who has dieted most of their life and has unhealthy relationship with food and diets, I suggest NOT tracking. It can make people neurotic and extreme and generally unhappy. I advise not tracking for the purpose of “staying under a certain calorie level” for the purpose of restriction.

For more information on this topic, please check out the posts listed below.

  • What do I Eat?
  • Good Enough Is Good Enough
  • Pressures and Expectations
  • Body Types
  • Diet the Short Version

For these folks I recommend doing a “portion size” approach. Meaning, protein the size of the palm of your hand, all the veggies you can fit in, starchy carbs the size of the front of your closed fist (more if you are super active), added fat the size of your thumb. Or on a normal size plate, ½ the plate of veggies, ¼ protein, ¼ starchy carbohydrates, and 1 tablespoon of added fat. Eat it all.

When to Track

I think that for most women it is important to track when there is a suspicion that you are not eating enough calories or enough protein. Both of these are super common among women specifically. Thanks to the pressure of societal standards many women under eat. Stop that! Eat the food!

The point of tracking isn’t to see if you were “good” or “bad”; food doesn’t have morality. It is to obtain data to see if you need to make adjustments to reach your goals. Like seeing how many M&Ms or in my case Margaritas are sneaking into your week.

I find that when I track, I put forth more effort to eat more protein and less sugar. I want to make sure that I’m eat enough calories to sustain my life and activities. To make sure I’m eating lots of veggies and not just chips, salsa, and cheese for dinner. I know you feel me! Not that there is anything wrong with that….clearly I do this with some frequency to bring it up.

It can be a good way to stay accountable to yourself and your health goals. It is also a good way to do periodic check-in to make sure, over time, you are still eating enough calories and protein.

Side Note: It goes without saying that if you are a physique, bikini or bodybuilder competitor you will track.

Tracking Isn’t a Way to Live

If you have never tracked your food, I think you should try it. Even if it isn’t in an AP with calories and macros, just write down everything you eat in a day for a month and then review it at the end of each week. You will see trends and where you can make better choices towards better health.

Tracking isn’t something that I recommend people do long-term. Again, it is time consuming and can drive you to an unhealthy extreme mindset.

Eat the food! All the food! Just eat!

3 Steps to Full Body Healing

12 Tuesday Jun 2018

#embracechange, #grace, #remove, #replace, #timeandconsistency

The body is an incredible creation. Its ability to grow and regenerate is remarkable. I believe that given the correct inputs the body will heal itself. The body is designed to live, it wants to live, and there are feedback loops / built-in mechanisms for the body to use to increase longevity.

A few feedback loops that exist in the body that we consider body dysfunction is actually the body’s way of keep itself alive, for example: insulin resistance, diabetes, reverse T3, hypothyroidism.

I have randomly and repeatedly heard people taking about various examples of changes they made to their diet and lifestyle that allowed their body to heal itself of some pretty serious diseases and dysfunctions.

If you suffer from a dysfunction or disease in your body, my very first suggestion is a food and lifestyle overhaul. 1) Remove the things that are offensive to the body 2) Replace the removed things with new things that promote healing in the body 3) Give your body time, consistency, and grace.

1. Remove

We live in a very toxic world. Think about what you put on your skin. What you breathe in your lungs. What you put into your mouth.

Swap out conventional for the least processed forms you can find and afford.

2. Replace

Super filtered clean water for the inside and the outside of your body.

Clean High-Quality Real Whole Food

  • There are lots of resources on my page. Here is a general one.
  • Here is also a post I did talking about growing your own Fresh Produce.

Clean High-Quality Supplements

I’m an affiliate for the three brands listed below, because I believe in them.

  1. Nutreince
  2. Doc Parsley’s Sleep Remedy
  3. Vital Proteins

Other Brands I like: Designs for Health, Biotics, Equip Foods, Paleo Valley, Pure Encapsulations, Thorne

3. Time, Consistency & Grace

Each organ in your body has cell turnover and regeneration; given the correct nutrients and enough time you can build a new healthy body! Not all cells turn over at the same rate so parts of your body will be younger than others….soooo not a completely new body all at once.

Check out these interesting articles:

  • The Truth About Your Body’s Cell Regeneration
  • Cell Regeneration: A Matter of Life and Death

If you find yourself with a body dysfunction or disease take away the toxins, give your body the things it needs to heal, and give yourself some time (and lot of sleep).  Your body can and will heal.

This day in age we’ve gotten accustomed to instant gratification; this is not how healing works. There is no quick way to do this. It take time and consistency. If you want to be healthy and live a long time you have to change your thinking around what it takes….it takes time and consistency…..day-in-day-out for the length of your life. There is no end point. There is no “when I get there” to arrive at.

Give yourself grace every day on your life journey and health journey, because beating yourself up for something as insignificant as eating a cookie doesn’t do you any good.

I think the most difficult thing that took me forever to accept is that my body has changed and will continue to change as I age. The needs my body has over the span of my life has and will change. This is why no one way of eating or exercising will be the end-all-be-all for the entirety of your life, it will change just as your body changes and the needs of your body changes.

Embrace the change! It occurs weather you embrace it or not.

Safe Skincare Brands

#safebeauty, #safeskincare

I’m fairly certain there are thousands of safe skin care brands out there, so by no means is this list comprehensive. If you cannot find what you want or need from these brands then good luck to you….

Ingredients

Most safe skincare brands typically will boldly proclaim what is not in their products on their webpage, while also providing a list of what is. When you check out a skincare company online, under About Us or Ingredients or something like that, there should be a loud proclamation of what you will not find in their products. If the site doesn’t have that, it is likely that they use ingredients that are not ideal, despite their use of words like “natural” and or also using some identifiable ingredients.

Check out this post for the “top ingredients to avoid in products”.

The EWG Skin Deep site and AP are good places to start when curious about a brand or product.

Suggested Brands

Keep in mind that no product or brand is perfect, but there are a lot of safer high-performing options out there; some of these are list below in alphabetical order. What Do I Eat?

24 Thursday May 2018

#consistencyisking, #findyourbalance, #jasonseib, #nodietmentality, #pursuehealth

If you have read much of what I post, you will see I believe the following things:

  • What you put in you get out
  • What you do the majority of the time will rule
  • Consistency is king
  • Quality matters

Diet Mentality

Having said that, I also think you do not have to “diet”; you do not have to be “on” or “off” a plan or diet to be healthy or to lose body fat. You do need to be conscience, aware, mindful, and deliberate about what you are putting in your body; thus the list above.

I used to be a dieter. I used to use different ways of eating as a diet. When I found Paleo I was super sick, this way of eating rebounded my health to about as good as it has ever been. When I deviated, my health when down. Over the years, I still struggled with the mental concept of being “on” or “off” a certain way of eating, Paleo, Low Carb etc. As I moved through my most recent health struggles, over the past 4 years (with this last year being pretty good), I was forced to rethink my perspective around food and diets. I found a balance I didn’t know existed. Check out my post: Diet the Short Version.

Pursue Health

Something that I knew for a long time, but didn’t put into full practice (until now) is that a healthy body will automatically balance out its own body-fat to a healthy ratio. If you pursue optimal health, you’ll receive the wonderful and lovely side effect of a healthy body-fat percentage.

Side Note: I define “pursue health” as: 7-9 hours of quality sleep every night; lots of vegetables, meats, fruit as the first and most foods taken in; movement (walking, resistance training, sprinting occasionally); drinking adequate amounts of clean water; managing and eliminating stress; spending time with friends and family regularly; getting outside in nature and in the sun; and addressing skin care and other toxins coming in. For more information on this topic check out my posts: here and here.

While I had gotten to a point of carrying approximately 25 – 30 lbs of additional body fat, I also had gotten to a point that I was fed-up with “dieting” and I chose at that point that regardless of my body fat percentage, I was not going to torcher myself with diets anymore. I had to find a different driving factor. For me the #1 is to feel good (health) and #2 is to increase and maintain strong bones and muscles. #2 is particularly important as we age.

Finding a Healthy Balance

I started making small and consistent changes with the items listed above; they add up over time, creating a health pursuing lifestyle.

The balance I found with food is this…..the majority of the time I eat lots of vegetables, meats, fruits, and starchy whole food carbohydrates because it makes me feel good and they are tasty. The starchy carbs I like the most are potatoes, sweet potatoes, and rice. Occasionally…..I intake alcohol, pizza, chocolate, Chick-fil-A, chips etc.

You know what???? I don’t feel bad about it!

It is my choice to do, I enjoy them and move on. I don’t exercise more because I ate something (it doesn’t work that way). Mind you, I’m not “ripped”.…but I enjoy my life and food. I’m not stressing out about any of it.

I’ve lost about 12 lbs of body fat since finding an enjoyable balance. I’ve also increased muscle mass. I know these numbers because my chiropractic office has an InBody. I will get an evaluation done once or twice a year. I could probably get one done every 3 months, but I forget to do it; I do not recommend doing them more frequently than that. I have a little ways to go still for losing fat, but I’d much rather go slowly, enjoying the process than crash-diet, be miserable, and gain it all back later. I’m mentally pursuing health, not fat loss. Health also meaning mental and emotional health, not just physical health.

Suggestion

If you are reading this thinking that you can never get to this point, you can. There is help too; you do not have to do it by yourself. It does take work and consistency on your part. You have to want to change, you have to want it more than you want anything else.

I would like to suggest to you to look into Jason Seib. He is working tirelessly to help women change their perspectives about weight loss. He has a “diet” protocol that is effective. His podcast is awesome too. The first book he wrote The Paleo Coach is what turned me on to his work.

Introducing: My New Favorite “Age-Defying, Skin Perfecting” Foundation

Going into the spring and summer months in Texas, I tend to want to wear a lighter foundation, so that it feels like a second skin and not melting down my face in the heat and humidity.

While I still love Araza Natural Beauty’s 7-in-1 Coconut Cream Foundation and Green Tea Cream Concealer, it is full coverage and feels better for me to use during the cooler months when the air is dryer vs. the summer months. If you didn’t know already….in Texas we only really have two seasons….summer and winter-ish.

I recently found / was introduced to (thank you Ulta sales girl) a brand called juice BEAUTY and their Stem Cellular CC Cream.

CC Cream

Off the webpage linked to above:

Stem Cellular CC Cream

Side Note: This is my choice for a better and organic ingredient replacement product for BareMinerals’ Complexion Rescue Tinted Hydrating Gel Cream, which I had been using for years.

I’m finding that this new juice BEAUTY CC Cream is the perfect product for me. It is light, doesn’t sit in my fine lines and wrinkles, it has SPF, it has antioxidants, moisturizes, and it blends perfectly into my skin. I do not feel it on my face and my skin tone looks very even with it on.

The one thing…..it doesn’t smell good. I’ve smelled worse, but it isn’t “fragranced”, which is a good thing BUT it doesn’t smell good. I only notice the smell when I’m applying it to my face.

At this time, this is the only product that I’ve tried of this brand, but after exploring their webpage; I think I’ll be trying some other products!

I was told that their PHYTO-PIGMENTS Flawless Serum Foundation is also a very good product and is a medium to full coverage make-up that can be built-up for as little or as much coverage as you prefer.

Phyto-Pigments Serum Foundation

Off the webpage linked to above:

Phyto-Pigments Serum Foundation Benifits

Go to Ulta and color-match the product to your skin and then……if you go to their webpage (I linked it above and below) there is a little button that pops up on the bottom of the page that says “Get 15% off your first order” – do that!

It is very important to me that I use organic, clean, non-poisonous make-up on my skin.

The performance of a product is important, but so are the ingredients used and where they are sourced from.

Finding a brand that is committed to the safety of their products to people, animals, and the environment is truly unique. Check out the links above for more information. Side Note: Beauty Counter is also one of these brands.

I feel good supporting brands like juice BEAUTY, Araza Natural Beauty, and Beauty Counter (I buy through Hayley Mason). They are doing things right!

I hope you choose to check out juice BEAUTY products; I’m loving them!

  6. Food as a religion [34:49]
  7. About the documentary [42:02]

Diana Rodgers has devoted herself to all things that promote sustainability. There have been many one-sided documentaries that have come out as of late that are pure fallacy and biased statistics. Here are my thoughts on one of them in particular. She has taken it upon herself to create a documentary that is based on science and the truth of what animals do for the health of our soil and planet. Here is a link to her Kale vs. Cow the Case for Better Meat page. There are lots of fantastic resource links at the bottom of this page, I highly suggest you check out.

I am so excited about this documentary, as I trust her and know that she will provide accurate and truthful information. As her slogan goes: “It’s Not the COW, It’s the HOW”. Meaning that it isn’t the growing and eating of cows that is the problem it is HOW of the raising of the cows that is the problem.

Diana just put out a new post called: Make America GRAZE Again! It is full of fantastic information and videos.

Diana is on a roll! Her new post called: It’s Not the Cow, it’s the How: New Study Shows Grass-fed Beef Can be a Carbon Sink talks about a new study proving that by using better grazing techniques, farmers are able to “produce healthier cattle and regenerate soils”.

More and more people I know are choosing to eat Vegan. I am greatly concerned about their long-term health, because of this choice. People naively think that eating Vegan is “saving the animals” and is healthy for their body long-term.

Keep in mind that I do believe that eating lots of organic vegetables and fruit, nuts, seed etc. is very healthy for your body. Here are more of my thoughts on this subject.

I also believe that supporting the operations of factory farming practices is not a great choice. You do not have to become Vegan to not support these destructive practices. You just need to source better quality meat. Here is one of many posts that lists Quality Food Sources. The best part is that our bodies don’t need as much high-quality meat to be healthy, which is also more economical. So, you will be eating less meat and still getting the health benefits from it as well as supporting a soil and planet restoration way of growing animals and plants.

What most vegetarians and vegans fail to realize or admit is that not only are they still killing thousands animals and their habitats through the mass factory farming practices of growing vegetables and fruits, but also poising the planet, animals, and ourselves through the herbicides, pesticides, and transportation of these vegetables and fruits. The monocrop (definition: Monocropping is the agricultural practice of growing a single crop year after year on the same land, in the absence of rotation through other crops or growing multiple crops on the same land (polyculture). Corn, soybeans, and wheat are three common crops often grown using monocropping techniques.) growing practice is also a huge issue for the same reasons provided above, plus they are typically GMO products and hugely subsidized by the government.

The majority of vegans and vegetarians, I know, also eat a ton of processed foods, made with products from the monocrops. Eating vegetables and fruits out of season that are transported hundreds if not thousands of miles. Neither of these things are healthy for the planet nor to animals and I think not healthy for our bodies either.

I love Diana Rodger’s book The Homegrown Paleo Cookbook; perhaps this book will help my vegetarian and vegan friends learn to grow their own vegetables and fruits and maybe animals too.

If you are like me and are concerned about animals and the health of our planet, it is up to you to be fully informed to use your discernment and not believe everything that you are fed (pun intended).

Let’s go to the source, quite literally, the Bible (thus God) says that He gave us every moving things that lives to be food, just as He gave us green plants. God’s intention was for us to grow and eat animals. He wouldn’t have told us to do this, if it were unhealthy for us or the plant. While I found some of what is in this book to be a bit extreme, I love the history and ideas behind it; check out The Maker’s Diet.

I wish all my people well regardless of how you choose to eat. I pray each of you to be healthy and have life-long vitality.
